What are the Most Common Plumbing Problems?

Published on

If something goes wrong with your home's plumbing, you may find yourself wondering if this is normal? Do other people have this go wrong with their plumbing or is it just me? Here is a breakdown of the most common plumbing problems and ways to fix it yourself!

Dripping faucets are a main issue that homeowners face. A dripping faucet happens a lot and most people will ignore it. That dripping faucet can not only waste lots of water, but it can waste your money as well. The main cause of a leaky faucet is worn out washers. This is an inexpensive and easy fix. To replace the washers, turn off the main water supply, unscrew the leaky handle that controls the flow to the water spout. Remove the old washer and drop in a new one. This should solve the dripping faucet issue!

Leaky pipes is another common plumbing problem. Leaky pipes occurs a lot during the winter months but it can also be very common year-round. A good way to tell if you have any pipes that are slowly leaking is to keep an eye out for wet spots on the ground or ceiling. Water damage to your home can be costly so you should fix leaky pipes right away.

Running toilets are another frequent plumbing problem. A running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per day. You could check the flapper or the flush valve first, it could be an inexpensive fix. This could be an easy fix, like a new faucet or shower head, but a plumber might be the best person to fix for a number of reasons. Low water pressure is also common, you could have a hidden leak in your home or corrosion inside your pipes. If you aren't sure which one it is, you should call your plumber. You can always try to change the shower head or faucet first to see if that does the trick. They also may just need to be cleaned out as the shower head or faucet aerator screen can become clogged.

A leaking hose bib is common more in the spring and summer months. Hose bibs that have not been protected during the winter months can crack and begin to leak. It is a good idea to have a frost-proof hose bib which will reduce the chances of having future leaks. Though you can also have slow or clogged drains. If you are going to use an over the counter product, read the directions carefully. You can prevent your drains from becoming clogged by placing a strainer over the kitchen and bathroom drains to prevent things like hair or other debris from slipping through. Never pour grease down the drain either! Dispose of grease in a coffee can and put in your regular trash on trash day.
